CHAPTER 22

April 1928

One blustery April morning, Sandy parked his car in the alley. As he inserted his key in the padlock, he caught his foot on a pile of tattered newspapers secured under a brick. A few minutes later, Bill arrived and Sandy strolled out of the office to greet him.

“Good Morning, Bill.”

“Hello, boss.”

They chatted for a few minutes about the day’s line-up.

“Are you all set? We have plenty on our plate today.”

“Aye, aye, boss. I’ll be onto it.”

“Oh, before you start, Bill. Have you noticed any down and outs loitering in the alley? I found a pile of newspapers under a brick by the doorway. Has someone been sleeping at our entrance?”

“Can’t say I’ve seen anyone.”

The telephone rang. Dolores called Sandy to take the call, and he forgot the incident. Come closing time, Sandy wiped his hands and collected his tools.

Tom was wandering around looking for something. “Seen the crowbar, boss? I laid it on the ground near the entrance before I drove the Vauxhall into the showroom.”

“No, I expect it’ll turn up.”

Sandy and Dolores went home. After a cozy dinner, Elmer joined them by the fire. He settled into his armchair to read a copy of the New York Times he’d just received by a post from his financier in America.

“Apartment prices in New York are increasing. I could invest in Wall Street before stocks skyrocket, but real estate is the better option. Sandy, I’ll call in that loan. Your tires are doing well, thanks to Dunlop.”

“Yes, thank you, they are.”

Dolores glanced up from her Vogue magazine. “Oh, we have plans to install a mezzanine office. I’ve had several inquiries from customers about selling their used cars. Since our tire sales are high, we should invest in used cars and display them in the showroom.”

Sandy stood with his back to the fireplace, rocking on his heels, as he contemplated Elmer’s remarks about the stock market. He’d heard it was hotting up fast, and he hoped Elmer wouldn’t go in too deep.

“Sir, I’ve been setting aside a nest egg for you, but since the business is making reasonable profits, I prefer Dolores’s proposal. Would you be agreeable to half payment and the rest next year?”

“Oh Daddy, please, won’t you agree? I’ve been dying to stock the showroom. The repair department is thriving under Sandy’s supervision, but sales are my forte.”

Elmer frowned. “I prefer you refund the loan. If I delay, the market prices will run too high for me to invest.”

“You could sell your shares, Daddy. Why don’t you transfer your investments to England?”

“True, my girl, but once an American, always an American. I like to keep a stake in the New York market.”

“But Daddy, you like working at Dunlop, don’t you?”

“Yes. It keeps me going, but when I retire, I’ll return to New York. Sandy, if you don’t repay it, I’ll invest in the stock market. Not my best option, but I will make a quick turnover. When I offered you that loan, I expected you to repay it.
